What to Expect on Your First Visit
Your first visit will consist of an exam and a full set of x-rays (if you do not have current x-rays from another provider). A full set of x-rays is generally taken every three to five years. They allow us to see what is hidden below the gum line. Many problems can be identified on x-rays before they have had a chance to start hurting or cause any noticeable symptoms. We can also see your jaw, sinuses, and the general condition of your gum tissue and bone. At our office we will never take unnecessary x-rays, but in order to do the thorough job that you deserve we must have a current set of x-rays. You can request copies of your x-rays from your previous provider and bring them with you, or have them mailed directly to us. If we do not have your x-rays in time for your appointment, we will need to either take new ones or re-schedule as Dr. Rayne is not able to perform a complete exam without these.
We do not typically provide a cleaning at the first visit. This is because we have no way of knowing what type of cleaning you will need, and what length of appointment you will need until the examination is complete. The incidence of gum and bone disease has increased in the past several years, and we must provide the appropriate care accordingly. Cleanings range from a standard cleaning, which is what most people are referring to when they say “cleaning” to Therapeutic Periodontal (gum and bone) Therapy which is a method used to treat and manage Periodontal Disease. Once Dr. Rayne has had a chance to examine you, we will schedule you for the appropriate type of cleaning as well as any treatment needs she has diagnosed.
